MSc Opportunity - Aquaculture
Faculty of Land and Food Systems, UBC
DFO/UBC – Centre for Aquaculture and Environmental Research

Funding is available for two years ($16,500 per year) for a qualified MSc student to undertake research on a new innovative approach to aquaculture. The student will be part of the NSERC- Canadian Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture Network (CIMTAN), which provides national networking and research exchange opportunities. Integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA) is a sustainable approach to aquaculture that involves using the organic waste from upper trophic finfish (salmon, sablefish), to support the growth of invertebrates (sea cucumbers, mussels), which in turn provide inorganic waste to support the growth of algae (kelp, seaweed).

The project will be based at the DFO/UBC-Centre for Aquaculture and Environmental Research located in West Vancouver, BC. The MSc thesis will involve conducting nutrition studies on sablefish to determine fish growth efficiency, feed digestibility, and feces composition. The project involves collaborations with scientists located at Vancouver Island University, and Fisheries and Oceans Canada.

Candidates interested in aquaculture and nutrition should meet UBC graduate studies requirements to start in September 2010. Please direct all inquires to Dr. Shannon Balfry (balfry_interchange.ubc.ca). Deadline for application is March 31, 2010
