AQUACULTURE PROGAM:

Annually DENV conducts Environmental Site Evaluations (ESEs) of approximately 90 marine aquaculture sites to verify compliance with the Water Quality Regulation of the Clean Environment Act. The marine aquaculture sites are also required to conduct annual benthic habitat monitoring. DENV conducts audits of approximately 20 of these sites each year. Both the ESEs and the benthic monitoring audits are requirements under the Environmental Management Program for the Marine Finfish Cage Aquaculture Industry.

STUDENT POSITION:

DENV, Saint John Regional Office, requires a student for a 16-week term to assist the Marine Aquaculture Biologist with conducting Environmental Site Evaluations and benthic monitoring audits of the marine finfish aquaculture sites. This position will require inspection of sites aboard a boat on the Bay of Fundy and offers challenging goals and objectives. Also the student will be involved in new and ongoing aquaculture research projects to improve the scientific knowledge base from which the Department draws upon to regulate the environmental impacts of aquaculture. Ideally the applicant will be going into the third or fourth year of their degree; have taken some marine or aquatic related courses and is comfortable around water.
