The theme of the conference—Aquaculture: Meeting the Challenges—provided an opportunity to emphasize the advances the industry has made and discuss opportunities for the future.

    The 16th International Pectinid Workshop (IPW) was held in Halifax, Nova Scotia from May 11-18, 2007. This was the second time the IPW was held in Canada and the first time on the east coast of Canada. The 16th International Pectinid Workshop (IPW) was held in Halifax, Nova Scotia from May 11-18, 2007. There were 115 delegates from across Canada and from fourteen other countries all around the world. As part of the IPW, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) Aquaculture Collaborative Research and Development Program (ACRDP) sponsored the scallop aquaculture workshop.

    The St. Andrews work shop series is a collaboration between the St. Andrews Biological Station and the Aquaculture Association of Canada. These proceedings are a product of that collaboration and were funded by the Science Branch of Fisheries and Oceans Canada in Ottawa.

    During the Aquaculture Canada conference held in St. John’s, NL on July 3-6, 2005, a special session was held to highlight the vital role that public awareness and education play in the development of the aquaculture industry. As with other new and developing commercial industries, aquaculture is experiencing challenges communicating its ‘messages’ to the public. Such messages include promoting awareness of aquaculture products as healthy and safe food choices, the types of work available in the industry, the various species being cultured, and the sustainable farming practices used by the industry.

    The St. Andrews work shop series is a collaboration between the St. Andrews Biological Station and the Aquaculture Association of Canada. These proceedings are a product of that collaboration and were funded by the Science Branch of Fisheries and Oceans Canada in Ottawa. Funding to support speaker travel was provided by the National Aquatic Animal Health Program (NAAHP). The New Brunswick Salmon Growers′ Association also provided financial support to the workshop.
